My fundraising journey with Dervla
Updated: Mar 7, 2023
What drew you to climbing Kilimanjaro with Dig Deep?
I was made aware of the challenge after getting a follow from the Loughborough Kilimanjaro team on Instagram. After looking through their photos, videos, and researching into the charity, I felt determined to join. I know that it will be a once in a life time experience for a great cause, so there was no reason not to join!
Have you done anything like this before?
I have never done anything like this before, and I’m not a fitness fanatic. Although this makes the challenge more daunting, it’s giving me the determination to actively prepare for the climb.
You've already raised an incredible amount, how did you get started?
I started by posting my fundraising link, with a small paragraph about the challenge and Dig Deep, on all my social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat). I also sent this via message to family members and close friends, who then forwarded/shared the link onwards to help spread the cause. This meant friends of friends/family were also donating.
Are you currently hosting any fundraisers?
At the moment, my lovely Nan has made homemade Christmas face masks for me to sell. I’m also promoting our team Christmas Dinner raffle, which gives people the opportunity to win £150 in supermarket vouchers when donating £2 to my page.
Additionally, I’ve signed up to Easyfundraising, which is a super easy way to gain some money for any cause. I’m hoping to get in touch with my secondary school and local primary schools to help reach my target. Donations could be made through non-school uniform days or competitions, like designing a T-shirt for me to wear on the summit. Also, I’m hoping to do a big hamper made up of donated vouchers/stock from retailers, and raffle it off.
What are you most looking forward to over the next year?
I’m most looking forward to reaching the summit, while raising money for an incredible charity. I feel like I will emotionally - and physically! - grow from this challenge, which will make the experience all the more unforgettable. I’m also excited to share this experience with an amazing group of people who are joining the climb.
Thank-you for taking the time to answer our questions Dervla, we can't wait to see you reach the Roof of Africa next year!
