Biogas digesters are fed with water and manure and produce cooking gas and organic fertilizer.
Biogas digesters impact on different areas of a community and the environment.
Deforestation - Biogas digesters help to reduce deforestation as firewood is replaced by the gas produced by the digester for cooking.
Greenhouse Gases - Emissions will be saved from no longer burning as much firewood and from burning off the methane gas in the manure. The manure would normally naturally decompose and release the methane into the atmosphere. Methane is 20 times more damaging as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Planting Schemes – The waste product from the digesters is fertiliser. This can be used to
maintain the nutrients and water levels in the ground and encourage the use of home-grown produce.
Health - Those cooking in the kitchen will no longer have to inhale the fumes. Women and
children will no longer have to carry heavy firewood for miles on their backs.
Financial – Money will be saved by minimising their firewood consumption and by providing their own fertiliser to grow their
own food.

Educational – By implementing these digester schemes in communities they will see the
direct impact of using sustainable methods which they will be able to incorporate into their everyday lives.
